Helena Ann (Boden) Ubelaker, daughter of Nicholas & Helena (Arnoldy) Boden was born December 27, 1927, in rural Tipton, KS. She passed away May 28, 2020, at Parkview Care Center, Osborne, KS, at the age of 92.
Helena lived her early life on a farm southwest of Tipton, KS, receiving her education at Holy Corner School through the 8th grade. Following school, she began working as a waitress at Center Cafe in Osborne where she met her future husband.
On June 8, 1948, Helena married James Ubelaker at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Osborne, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Cecilia, & Richard Letsch. They made their first home in Bloomington, KS, & later moved to the Ubelaker farm west of Osborne. To this union were born 4 children: Douglas James, Kenneth Lee, Sandra Kay, & Judy Ann. Helena & Jim celebrated 64 years of married life.
Helena worked cooking school lunches at Bloomington Grade School & cleaned many houses. She then began her long career of working in the meat department at Howe's Market, which later became Town & Country Market, which is now known as Girard's. She loved seeing & visiting with all of the customers. Her sandwich spread became wellknown.
Helena enjoyed cooking & baking. Many people will remember her chocolate sheet cake, fried chicken, baked beans, & sugar cookies. She & Jim enjoyed going to polka dances & playing cards with their neighbors & friends.
She had a great love for her family. Helena looked forward to cooking Sunday dinner for her children & grandchildren. She & Jim would always be the first to arrive at all of their activities.
Helena was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church & the Altar Society, Osborne.
Preceding Helena in death were her husband Jim in 2012; her parents- Nicholas & Helena Boden; 5 brothers- Mike, Frank, Tony, Nick & Edward Boden; 7 sisters- Barbara Kohn; Mary Brummer; Sister Angelita Boden; Josephine Steinlage; Elizabeth Arnoldy; Rose Greig; & Cecilia Letsch; & a grandson- James Colman Smith.
She is survived by sons- Doug (Linda) Ubelaker & Kenny (Shari) Ubelaker, both of Osborne; daughters- Sandy (Greg) Smith, Hays, & Judy (Joe) Gasper, Tipton; 12 grandchildren - Trenton (Sarah) Smith, Kelli (David) King, Jill (Aaron) Meister, Brooke (Joe) Terick, Krisa (Joel) Schneider, Karie Ubelaker, Michaela (Brian) Mans, Nolan Smith, Ryan Gasper, Tanner Gasper, Kenton (Kelsey) Ubelaker, & Austin (finance Sadie) Gasper; 11 great-grandchildren- Gavin Klausmeyer, Brayden King, Bryson King, Karter Mans, Corbin Mans, Stratton Mans, Levi Terick, Landri Gasper, Peyton Schneider, Alexander Terick, & Carly Mans; many nieces & nephews; & a host of other relatives & friends.
A vigil service & rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2020, at Clark-Gashaw Mortuary, Osborne.
The funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Osborne, with Father Daryl Olmstead officiating. Musicians were Brenda Henke & Glenda Schreiber. Songs included "Jealous of the Angels", "Be Not Afraid", "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)", "Beyond the Moon & Stars", "You Are Mine", & "How Great Thou Art". At Offertory, the grandchildren presented items representing their grandma. Lectors were Sandy Smith & Judy Gasper. Eucharistic minister was Linda Ubelaker. The 6 grandsons served as pallbearers & the six granddaughters served as honorary pallbearers.
Helena was buried in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Osborne.
