Leila Mae (Vandeventer) Rhoads

April 5, 1918 ~ October 14, 2019 (age 101)

Obituary

Leila M. Rhoads, 101, of Osborne, KS died Monday, October 14, 2019, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne, KS.

She was born in Perry, IA on April 5, 1918 to Goldie (Martens) and John W. Vandeventer.

Leila experienced a full life that few experience.  She was a mother to 7 and grandma to the world.  Leila could be counted on to ease the pains of life with a warm hug and a great pie.  Leila was known for her matchless family meals, strong will, tender-hearted generosity as well as telling a slightly bawdy joke every once in a while.  Leila was in her glory when she was fixing a huge home-made family meal for every holiday or at the first sign of an empty stomach.  Leila took great pride in her family and she was happiest when serving any of them a sound helping of whatever she had just taken out of the oven.

Leila was not a stranger to the pain of life's disappointments or a broken heart.  Leila endured the pain of a broken marriage as a young mother.  She used her strength to take care of each of her children.  She found joy and security of a life-long love when she said, "yes" to her soul-mate, Paul Rhoads, Sr. who she married on July 10, 1947.  They raised her 7 children together and shared the joys and sorrows of life for over 60 years.

Heartache was a very familiar presence in Leila's life as she stood by the graveside of 6 of her 7 children and her beloved husband.  Leila out-lived all of her brothers and sisters.  Through all of life's joys and sorrows, she held tightly to her faith in Jesus and never lost her spirit of generosity or her love for that red Cadillac!

Leila lived well, loved well and played a mean game of progressive rummy.  She always gave her best to her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Darlene Miller, of Osawatomie, KS, and several grandchildren, many great grandchildren and a great great grandchild.

Leila was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1999 and 6 children.
